Random NBA Team Picker

All 30 NBA franchises on one wheel, listed by conference.

About this tool

About the Random NBA Team Picker

This wheel holds all 30 NBA franchises, ordered by conference: the fifteen Eastern teams first, then the fifteen Western teams. Each spin draws one club at random with equal odds, which is exactly what you want when the point is to remove personal bias from the choice rather than to argue about who is best.

The most common reason people reach for a random team generator is a video game. Franchise, MyLeague and career modes are far more interesting when the roster is assigned instead of chosen, and a random draw stops you from restarting with the same superteam for the fifth season running. It works equally well for a fantasy draft order or a pick-a-team challenge among friends.

Teams are listed by nickname only, as plain editable text. There are no logos, jerseys or club artwork here, so nothing on this page is official league material. Swap any label for a full city name, cut the list down to a single conference, or paste in a completely different league — the wheel treats every entry the same way.

Four quick steps

How to use it

  1. Press spin to draw one of the 30 teams at random.
  2. To limit the draw to one conference, untick the fifteen teams you do not want; the odds recalculate instantly.
  3. Drafting for several people? Turn on no-repeat mode in Settings so each team can only be drawn once.
  4. Rename entries to full names like "Los Angeles Lakers" if you prefer, or paste your own league list over them.
  5. Share the finished wheel as a link so everyone in the group draws from the identical list.

Starting options

What is on the wheel

All thirty franchises are on the wheel; the ten described below are the Eastern Conference teams that appear first, before the rest of the East and the West.

Celtics
The first segment on the wheel, and a franchise with deep history to inherit. Drawing it in a career save usually means expectations are set high from day one.
Nets
A club whose fortunes have swung hard between rebuilds and title pushes, which makes it an interesting random draw if you like inheriting an unsettled situation.
Knicks
The biggest market in the league, and the loudest one. Worth keeping on the wheel if part of the appeal is managing pressure rather than just managing a roster.
76ers
Rename this to Philadelphia 76ers if you prefer full club names; every entry is plain editable text and the wheel treats the longer label exactly the same.
Raptors
The league's only non-US franchise, which some group challenges treat as its own category. Untick it if you are restricting a draw to American teams only.
Bulls
A popular pick means people often try to steer towards it. Spinning removes that argument, since the draw is decided before the animation even starts turning.
Cavaliers
One of several Central Division sides here. Cut the wheel down to a single division if you want a tighter draw than one conference gives you.
Pistons
A rebuilding-era pick in most save files, so it suits a challenge run. Turn on no-repeat mode if you plan to redraw a new team each season.
Pacers
A mid-market club that rarely gets chosen deliberately, which is the point of a random draw: it hands you teams you would never pick yourself.
Bucks
The tenth entry, and the last one covered here. The remaining five Eastern teams and all fifteen Western teams follow in the same list.

Useful moments

Good for

  • Assigning a random franchise for NBA 2K MyLeague, MyGM or a career save
  • Drawing draft order or team assignments for a fantasy basketball league
  • Picking which team to follow for a season as a neutral fan challenge
  • Choosing sides before a pickup game, a sports quiz round or a group bet on the standings

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the wheel include all 30 NBA teams?

Yes. All 15 Eastern Conference and all 15 Western Conference franchises are on the wheel, each with an identical chance of being drawn.

How do I draw only Eastern or Western Conference teams?

Untick the teams you want to exclude in the entries list instead of deleting them. Disabled teams leave the wheel and the remaining fifteen split the odds evenly, so you can switch back at any time.

Can several people draw different teams without duplicates?

Turn on no-repeat mode in Settings. Each drawn team is set aside so it cannot come up again, which is what you want for a draft order or when assigning a team to every player in a group.

Are team logos included?

No. Every entry is plain text you can edit, and no logos, kits or club artwork are bundled with this template. It is an unofficial fan tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NBA or any team.

Can I add teams from another league?

Yes. Every entry is editable text, so you can paste in a WNBA, EuroLeague, or college list over the top, or delete a few teams and add expansion or historic clubs. The wheel gives whatever is on it an equal share of the odds.

How do I assign a team to each person in a group?

Turn on no-repeat mode, then spin once per person in a fixed order and write the result down as it comes out. Each drawn team is set aside so nobody can be handed the same club, which is what you want for a draft.
