Using it well

When is a random decision wheel actually useful?

A wheel does not make a good decision for you. What it does is end a decision you have already effectively made — or one that does not deserve any more of your attention. That distinction is worth holding onto, because it is what separates the moments where randomness helps from the moments where it is a way of avoiding the work.

The options are genuinely equal
When you have compared the choices honestly and none is better, more analysis will not find a difference that is not there. Randomness ends the loop.
A group cannot agree
Three people, three preferences, nobody willing to be the one who decides. A visible spin removes the social cost of choosing.
Someone has to be picked
Who presents first, who goes next, who takes the last shift. A random draw everyone can watch beats a judgement call nobody can verify.
The decision is costing more than it is worth
Twenty minutes deciding on a fifteen-minute lunch is a bad trade. Spinning turns a stalled choice back into a small one.

There is a second, less obvious use. Spin, and watch your own reaction before you act on the result. Disappointment tells you which option you actually wanted; relief tells you the same thing from the other direction. Where not to use it

Do not use a random wheel for medical, legal, financial, safety or employment decisions, or for anything where one outcome is meaningfully worse than another for you or for someone else. Those choices need information, advice from someone qualified, or simply more thought — not a coin toss dressed up as one. The same applies to anything involving money at stake or a legally binding commitment. If getting the answer wrong would matter tomorrow, the wheel is the wrong tool.
